A Christmas Story Bundle Up Relay Activity

A Christmas Story By Julie Pirkle

In the movie A Christmas Story, winter weather spurs Ralphie’s mom to bundle up his brother, Randy, with so many layers of winter clothes that he literally can’t put his arms down to his sides – They’re stuck straight out! Inspired by the classic holiday movie, the A Christmas Story bundle up relay activity challenges preschoolers to see how quickly they can dress and undress their partner in the most layers of winter clothes. This quirky preschool activity will definitely bring on as many laughs as the movie. Keep your video camera handy!

What You Will Need

Gather up as many of the following articles of clothing that you can:
Jackets and Sweaters Difficulty Level 3 out of 5 Hands
Sweatshirts
Sweat Pants
Snow Suits
Winter Hats
Gloves and Mittens
Socks Scarves

Laundry Basket

Timer

What to Do

Step 1:

Put all of the clothing into a laundry basket and place it in the center of the room.

Step 2:

Divide participating preschoolers up into teams of two. (You will need at least four preschoolers to compete in the A Christmas Story bundle up relay activity.)

Step 3:

Designate one preschooler on each team to be the bundler. The other preschooler will be the one who gets bundled up.

Step 4:

Line the teams up in a circle evenly around the laundry basket.

Step 5:

Set the timer for two minutes and instruct preschool bundlers to race to the laundry basket, choose an article of clothing, and race back to his/her partner, dressing him/her in the piece of the clothing.

Step 6:

Preschoolers repeat Step 5 until all articles of clothing have been used or time runs out, whichever comes first.

Step 7:

Once the first leg of the A Christmas Story bundle up relay activity concludes, have preschoolers count how many layers of clothing they were able to put on their partner.

Step 8:

The team with who has managed to bundle up the most wins!

Step 9:

For the second half of the A Christmas Story bundle up relay activity, reverse the order. This time, give preschoolers one minute to remove as much of the clothing from their partner as they can.

Step 10:

The team that finishes removing the clothing first wins.

Step 11:

Award the winners of A Christmas Story bundle up relay activity with a special prize. Preschool Activities suggests a holiday mug filled with a packet of hot chocolate. To prevent any hurt feelings from dampening the Christmas fun, give every preschooler who participated a candy cane.
