Growing Heart Valentine's Day Activity

Criss Cross By Julie Pirkle

This Valentine's Day show your preschooler just how much you love him/her with the growing heart Valentine's Day activity. Preschoolers will love planting mommy's magical, candy heart and watching it grow a little each day until it blossoms into a giant construction paper heart flower on Valentine's Day. This visual representation of love is sure to both excite and touch your preschooler during this special holiday and become a cherished Valentine memory.

What You Will NeedDifficulty Level 1 out of 5 Hands

Seven Sheets of Red or Pink Contruction Paper

A Conversation Heart

Paper Cup

Seven Popsicle Craft Sticks

Handful of Potting Soil

Small Watering Can

Scissors

Felt Tip Pen

Growing Heart Valentine's Day Activity Preparation

Step 1:

Using the construction paper, cut out seven heart shapes. Make each one bigger than the next. The first heart should be small and the last heart should be as large as possible.

Step 2:

On the six smallest hearts write the sentence, "My Love Grows for You Everyday."

Step 3:

On the biggest heart write, "My Love for You Will Never Stop Growing. Happy Valentine's Day."

Step 4:

Glue a popsicle craft stick to the back of each heart so that the heart looks like a flower and the popsicle stick appears to be the stem.

Step 5:

Put the heart flowers in a place that your preschooler won't find them.

Tip: Be sure to cut the hearts so that there is a noticable size difference between each one.

What to Do

Step 1:

Have your preschooler fill the paper cup halfway full with potting soil.

Step 2:

Tell your preschooler that your love grows for him/her everyday, and that you have a magic heart to illustrate just how much you love him/her this Valentine's Day.

Step 3:

Give your preschooler the "magic" conversation heart, and let him/her plant it in the potting soil by burying it in the middle.

Step 4:

Have your preschooler use the watering can to water his/her Valentine's Day plant. Tell him/her that he/she needs to water it once everyday until Valentine's Day.

Note: Start the growing heart Valentine's Day activity on February 7. The first Valentine heart will sprout on February 8.

Step 5:

After your preschooler falls asleep at night, plant the first (the smallest) Valentine heart in the soil for your preschooler to discover when he/she wakes up or when he/she goes to water the Valentine's Day plant next.

Note: You will plant the hearts in order from smallest to largest.

Tip: If your preschooler can't read, be sure to read the sentiment on the Valentine's Day heart to him/her each day.

Step 6:

Repeat Step 5 until you plant the last Valentine heart on Valentine's Day.

Happy Valentine's Day!
