Sticker Trading Dice Activity
By Julie Pirkle
Preschoolers love stickers, but never seem to know quite what to do with them. Keep your preschoolers stickers from ending up on walls or hitting the trash with the sticker trading dice activity. All you need is a journal, a few dozen stickers and some dice to create a homemade sticker book and jumpstart your preschooler's sticker collection. A roll of the dice will determine how many stickers preschoolers can choose or "steal" from fellow participants. Your junior sticker collector will love admiring his/her sticker collection, acquiring new stickers and trading with friends.
What You Will Need
A Variety of Stickers
(Encourage preschoolers to bring new stickers they have from home as well. Tell them to only bring stickers they are willing to part with.)
A Non-Ruled Journal for each participant
Dice
Note: The sticker trading dice activity works best with a minimum of four preschoolers.
What to Do
Step 1:
Instruct preschooles to sit on the floor in a circle.
Step 2:
Place the stickers you've purchased and any that the preschoolers brought in the center of the circle.
Step 3:
Give each preschooler a non-ruled journal.
Tip: To cut costs, ask each preschooler participating to bring a new journal.
Step 5:
Choose a preschooler to go first, giving him/her the dice.
Step 6:
Have the preschooler roll the dice. The number he/she rolls is the number of stickers he/she can choose from the sticker pile in the center of the circle. For example, if he/she rolls a five, he/she gets to pick five stickers. If a preschooler rolls doubles, he/she still picks the number on the dice, but gets to immediately put the stickers he/she chooses in his/her journal. (The stickers acquired on a doubles roll are not available for "stealing" later in the game.
Step 7:
Play continues until all of the stickers have been chosen.
Step 8:
It's time for the lightening round. Each preschooler gets one more turn to roll the dice. He/she can "steal" the number of stickers rolled on the dice from any of the other players. For example, if a preschooler rolls a seven, he/she can pick seven stickers from one of the participants, or five from one and two from another, etc.
Step 9:
Once official play is over, allow preschoolers to freely trade stickers as they choose.
Step 10:
Have preschoolers stick their new stickers in their journal to create a homemade sticker book.
More Sticker Trading Dice Activity Fun
*If the journal your preschooler is using has a plain cover, provide him/her with glitter, puffy paints, etc. to decorate the sticker book.
*When your preschooler acquires new stickers have him/her put them in his/her sticker book for safekeeping and easy viewing.
*As your preschooler’s sticker collection grows, he/she will find it fun to create themed pages in their sticker book. For example, it’s fun to have a page of all puffy stickers or a page of all food stickers, etc.
