Randy's Play With Your Food Snowman Activity

Snowman Collage By Julie Pirkle

Just like Randy’s mom in A Christmas Story, all mothers have uttered the words, “Don’t play with your food!” Randy’s play with your food snowman activity gives preschoolers license to play with their food just this once. Preschoolers will get a kick out of erecting a snowman with their bare hands using mashed potatoes and other food items commonly found in your pantry. This quirky A Christmas Story activity makes for a perfect Christmas card photo op! Preschoolers who are really daring can eat their snowman creation once they're done.

What You Will Need

Difficulty Level 1 out of 5 HandsInstant Mashed Potatoes, prepared

Raisins

Pretzel Sticks

Shredded Raw Carrots

Cooked Spaghetti

Paper Plate(s)

What to Do

Step 1:

Put some raisins, spaghetti, pretzel sticks and carrots in small bowls.

Step 2:

Plop a few scoops of mashed potatoes on a paper plate for each preschooler participating in the A Christmas Story activity.

Step 3:

Give your preschooler the o.k. to play with his/her food and build a snowman. Help your preschooler mold the mashed potatoes into a snowman, adding raisins for eyes and buttons, pretzel sticks for arms, a spaghetti noodle for a scarf and a carrot shred for a nose.

Step 4:

After your preschooler has molded his/her snowman, encourage him/her to be creative and construct other sculptures out of the food. If your preschooler just wants to squish and squeeze mashed potatoes through his/her hands, that’s fine too.

Randy’s Play with Your Food Snowman Activity Tip

Take photos of your preschooler with his/her mashed potato snowman and include it in Christmas cards for a fun and whimsical holiday greeting.
