Thanksgiving Thank You Note Activity

A Bountiful Thanksgiving, Turkey on Oak LeafBy Julie Pirkle

It’s never too soon to teach your preschooler to write thank you notes, and there’s no better time than Thanksgiving. Help your preschooler write thank you notes to special family members and friends this Thanksgiving, thanking them for the wonderful people they are and the wonderful things they do. The Thanksgiving thank you note activity is a heartfelt way for your preschooler to show others how much he/she cares about them, and is the perfect activity to help preschoolers count their blessings. The Thanksgiving thank you note activity also makes a cherished holiday tradition from preschool to adulthood.

What to Do

Step 1:

Sit down with your preschooler and explain to him/her that you are going to write thank you notes to special family members and friends to let them know how much they are appreciated this Thanksgiving and all year around.

Step 2:

Have your preschooler choose a person he/she is thankful for this Thanksgiving.

Step 3:

Ask your preschooler to tell you why he/she is thankful for that person. Write down what he/she says in one of the note cards. Use his/her exact words as much as possible. It may be helpful to start out saying “I’m thankful for (Grandma) because,” and have your preschooler finish the sentence.

Tip: If you have a few designs of note cards, allow your preschooler choose a specific card for each person.

Step 4:

If your preschooler can write his/her own name, let him/her sign the note card. If not, you can do it for him/her.

Step 5:

Help your preschooler put the note card in the envelope, seal it and address it.

Step 6:

Show your preschooler where to place the stamp on each envelope.

Step 7:

Take your preschooler to the mailbox and let him her put the cards into the mailbox. You may opt to hand deliver note cards in person with your preschooler.
